What is Cheek Enhancement?

Cheek Enhancement is a non-surgical treatment, that is designed to provide fuller and well-defined cheeks, with long-lasting results.

Women and men can be born with little cheek volume. In addition, as a result of ageing, weight loss and other factors, cheek volume can be lost – the common causes of loss of cheek volume are decreasing bone density, thinning of the skin and drifting of the cheek’s underlying soft tissue downward with gravity.

QueenofTheSkin offers non-surgical cheek enhancement treatment for those who wish to address concerns in and around the cheek region.

Who is a candidate for Cheek Enhancement?

You might be a good candidate for Cheek Enhancement treatment if you have any of the following concerns:

  • Lack of volume in your cheeks
  • Poor cheek bone structure
  • Asymmetrical cheeks
  • Extended lines and wrinkle in the cheek region

What products are used?

You may commonly see a variety of different products being used within cosmetic clinics. These products will range in cost and the cost will reflect the consistency of the product, which will largely determine how long the product will last.

Entry level products are known to have a very thin and soft consistency, that are designed to last 4-6 months. Given how thin and soft these products are, they will not hold the shape and simply spread throughout the tissues. This means that you will be likely to just have a little volume added to the area, but the cheeks will not be well defined and contoured. These products are not generally recommended to treat the cheek region.

Mid-range products are typically thicker and designed to last 6-12 months – these products are generally used to treat the cheek region. This is because mid-range products have thicker molecular structure, to provide instant volume in the cheek region. While these products provide instant volume to the cheeks, they are not an ideal product to provide precise definition and contour to the cheek region.

We use only semi-permanent products when treating the cheek region. Semi-permanent products are very firm and are used by only the most highly trained and skilled cosmetic nurses – this is due to the precision required when placing the product in the cheek region. Semi-permanent products are designed to last 18-24months. Semi-permeant products can be used to spot treat little pockets of hollowing within the cheek region, and provide sharp, well-defined cheeks without the ‘overinflated’ cheek look.

Does the treatment hurt?

There are many different techniques used when treating the cheeks – these different techniques attract different levels of discomfort, ranging from very mild to moderate.

You will be asked to attend the clinic about 30mins-1 hour prior to treatment, so that topical anaesthetic can be applied. The time frame required to numb your skin, will depend on the technique being used to treat your cheek region. After the numbing cream has taken affect, you should find the treatment to be well-tolerated and comfortable.

The cheeks are often iced prior to injecting, which will help to provide more comfort throughout your treatment, and to reduce bruising.
In summary, you should find your experience quite pleasant.

Facial Muscle Relaxant Injections in combination with Cheek Enhancement

Facial Muscle Relaxant treatments are often combined with the cheek enhancement treatment. Facial Muscle Relaxant Injections will help to open-up the eye, elevate the upper eyelid and smoothen out lines and wrinkles that extend to the upper region of the cheeks. Combining Facial Muscle Relaxant Injections with your Cheek Enhancement treatment, will optimise your results even further.

Cheek Enhancement Cost

The cost for Cheek Enhancement can vary, depending on the amount of product required, and the number of treatment sessions required to achieve your desired result. In order to find to establish the cost of your treatment, you will need to schedule an in-clinic consultation with one of our cosmetic nurses.

Potential Side Effects

Every non-surgical procedure including Cheek Enhancement treatment, involves a certain amount of risk – it is important that you understand these risks and the possible complications associated with each treatment.

While the majority of patients do not experience the following, it is very important that you are ware of the more server potential side effects and discuss these potential side effects with your treating practitioner – this includes your Prescribing Doctor and the treating Registered Nurse. Only once you have had a detailed conversation with your Prescribing Doctor and your treating Registered Nurse, prior to your treatment, can you make an informed decision as to how you proceed with your treatment.

The most common side effects can occur immediately following your treatment or in some cases be delayed and can worsen over the coming hours and/or days following your treatment. Some of the most common side effects include but are not limited to the following:

  • Inflammatory Reactions (swelling, Skin redness)
  • Bruising
  • Bleeding/Haematoma
  • Itchiness
  • Tenderness
  • Paraesthesia/Numbness

Other adverse reactions may include:

  • Infections including abscesses, granuloma, and localised hypersensitivity
  • Induration or nodules
  • Skin Discoloration
  • Weak feeling effect

You will also need to consider the extremely rare but serious adverse events associated with intravascular injection of products, that have been reported and include temporary and permanent visual impairment, blindness, cerebral ischemia or cerebral haemorrhage, leading to stroke, skin necrosis, and damage to underlying structures.

The following are very common side effects after treatment and should resolve with time.

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Puncture Marks
  • Asymmetry
  • Tenderness
  • Hardness
  • Tightness

To prevent and/or help minimise any bruising after your treatment:

  • Application of a cold compress to the treatment area immediately and for at least 15minutes after.
  • The regular intermittent application of cold packs during the first 24-48 hours may be beneficial. A cycle to consider is 10min on and 5min off.
  • Sleep with the head elevated for the first evening.
  • Vigorous exercise can increase blood pressure and aggravate any bruising that is developing – therefore, exercise should be avoided for the first 24 hours.
  • You should avoid extreme heat for the first 24hrs (or until bruising has resolved).
  • Topical creams that may help with bruising – reduction in the development and helping in the resolution.
  • Arnica cream – apply liberally to affected area 3-4 x per day until resolution.
  • Vitamin k cream – apply liberally to affected area 3-4 x per day until resolution.
